I hated them with a deep and powerful hatred. How could a teenager feel such a deep emotion at such a tender age? But I did. I was disgusted by them, the way they looked, the sheer size of them. I would never. never. ever. drive a conversion van. I swore up and down that they were the most nastiest of all vehicles. Ironically I said this as I drove around town in an old orange Chevette.
And here I am. I'm sure my parents chuckled inside when Nate and I purchased the Beast. The biggest of vans, red and towering. I know my adolescent words probably still ring in their ears whenever I pull up with a bus load of kids in my 1998 conversion van. You can't miss it. It's a moving landmark. Sometimes I forget how visible it is since I'm the one sitting in the driver's seat. That is until I'm coming out of a store. While other shoppers rack their brains to remember where they parked this time, I just peer above all of the cars and like a mountain, there is my Beast.
I have eaten my own words in so many other areas, it's almost like a buffet.
"I'm not going to have kids."
Let's just let that one sink in for a bit.
As the oldest of six, I was surrounded by toddlers for most of my young life. While I loved them all, and even played mommy to my littlest sister, I was ready to move on to adult type things with adult type people. Here I am now and seven of my favorite people in the whole wide world are among the diaper clad, the not-yet-shaving crowd, the elementary crew. There is no way I could ever have known the depth of love that a mother has for her child. I can't even fully understand it now. They have changed me. Deeply.
The list goes on.
"My kids will never have runny, crusty noses and ratty unbrushed hair."
I think I just choked on my coffee.
I remember being a mommy of a not quite two year old and working in the church nursery. There was a brother and sister tag team, maybe two and four, that often came to play. Oh boy, they could fight. The sister once had a bite mark on her cheek from the brother and the brother had scrapes and bruises from roughhousing with his sister. Judgmental doesn't even begin to describe me. Did I have opinions about those two and their mommy! Good gracious, what was she thinking!
Gulp.
At least four of my seven children have had to be removed from the nursery for biting. We have had countless bruises and scrapes. "He kicked me", "She hit me", "He's looking at me". I have apologized to that mother a hundred times in my head. I wonder where she is now.
Dreaming and longing for glamor and prestige, I wanted to marry rich. I wanted to attend black tie parties weekly and wear fabulous gowns with fabulous shoes. Life was going to be fancy. I'm chuckling to myself as I sit here in my pajamas and bed head. Nothing is fancier than doing load after load of laundry. Well, except maybe scrubbing a toilet.
I was a cheerleader. I laughed at the cross country team. Why would you want to run unless someone or something was chasing you? Yet here I sit, logging miles in hopes of running the mother of all races. The 26.2.
I could go on and on.
It scares me now when I start to think a thought about what I will never do. Too many times that very thing is what I end up living. And loving. It's a good thing I'm not sitting in the driver's seat. I could if I wanted to, but I've learned along the way that I'm not the best of navigators and I may think I know what I want, but He has something much better planned for me. God's plan for my life was so far above what I could have handled, that He only gave me enough light to see the next step. If he would have shined a floodlight on the road up ahead, I think I would have turned and sprinted in the opposite direction, despite my hatred for running. You see, He was slowing changing my heart. The person I was at seventeen could never have handled the responsibility and beauty that I can fourteen years later. I know that today He isn't showing me much more than tomorrow because who I am today isn't ready for what I will take on ten years from now. Thank goodness He is patient.
"As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55:9

Thank you for sharing that. It was just what I needed.

What a great post! Thanks for sharing. I completely agree on the last paragraph. Thank goodness he's leading the way. :)
have a great day!

Wonderful! It caused me to reflect on things I said I'd never do.
Great post, Heth.
Great reminder that NEVER is a powerful word.
First you have me laughing out loud and then you bring me to tears. Beautiful insight.
You crack me up, though- driving a "landmark?' I will shop with you when I am old an can't find my way in the parking lot. Wait....that's alredy happened...!
I've discovered the same thing! I don't use the word "never" anymore. Great post!
Great post. I also had an orange chevette... well, orangy brown... that died at every stop light... those were the days :)
Love this one! - Sarah E.
ok, I've got it figured out :)
Oh so many memories in this post...your Chevette was sweeeeet. I was totally jealous of your cute little ride as I drove my gigantic Toronado around town. What a wonderful reflective post...it's so awesome to see the hand of God at work through the years. I'm so glad He doesn't shine that floodlight...He's so gracious and patient with us. xxoo
I know! Whenever I think 'never' in my head, I cringe deeply.
BTW, I would love to see pictures of the 'landmark' you're talking about.
Oh, so many of my owns words I've eaten. And so very glad I'm not the same person I was when I was a teen. Or even 10 years ago. I wonder where God's leading me. I wonder if I'm REALLY listening and following. I hope so!
FAB-U-LOUS!
I got one:
I'll never be one of THOSE people who keep a blog! What could they possibly have to say that could be of interest to anyone for any period of time????
praise Him that His plans are not mine. I shudder to think of the first boy i 'planned' to marry!
I really enjoyed reading that. Thank You.
We thought we were regular pros at the parenting thing.....until we had more than one child :-).
Great post!
Joining you in gratitude that He only shows us a step at a time! He knows what He's doing...
I LOVE the part about finding the beast in the parking lot. Our 8 passenger Chevy Venture will no longer cut it. We are looking into a 12 passenger vehicle. Oh-My-Word!!
Loved this post! I'm new to your blog and have really enjoyed my visit. I will definitely be back! Your family is beautigul!
I could have written this myself :)
Great post.
I love this post! I've learned to not say never myself, for time has a way of changing the never!
Thanks for that!
We have a van, too - except it's the 12 passenger kind. Cool, huh?
Great post.
You captured some of my feelings perfectly. Great post.
OK Heth, last night i was chuckling, but now that I've had time to finish reading, my eyes are tearing.
Beautifully said...
My 21 year-old daughter is saying she will never have kids. She says she might adopt, which is OK by me. But I wonder if she will stick to her guns. I can't believe you were a cheerleader; it just doesn't seem to fit your persona. I don't think it fits mine, either, but I was. This was a great reflective post.
I managed to never drive a minivan - went straight from a 2 door hatchback to the 12 pass van. Only 3 kids at the time, but we were planning ahead lol.
My best "never" was "I'm NEVER going to marry HIM;" whom, of course, I did :-)
And, You're tagged!
Gretchen
Thanks for the laugh outloud!
I guess I am cool since I'm driving a "mini" van...but I guess the conversion van is not out of the picture someday as our family grows.
I remember when we shared with some friends that we were getting a van, they just stared at us. We proudly told them that WE would make the minivan look cool. I don't think they were impressed. These childless couples...just they wait! :)
This was beautifully written Heather.
I am so glad the Lord is in the driver's seat and not me, otherwise who knows where I'd be today.
Great insight. I loved reading this :)
Ohhhh yeah. I have had to eat more words than anyone I know. Ought to teach a person to be a little less opinionated eh? Apparently not, because I just keep eating them.
Beautiful, Heth, simply beautiful.
I will never ever ever drive a Lexxus. Do you hear me GoD??
I said NEVER. Don't even TRY to make me!
I wasn't going to marry (married 14 years this year), no children (have two), rich (not rich), and driving a baby benz (drving a mini van too that I LOVE)! Isn't it funny how determined we are at such a young age and our lives are so different from that (in a awesome way).
