In the quest for making more space in our little *less than 900 square feet* house, we have started getting creative. The boys are now sleeping in their very own mini skyscraper. Tyler and Caedmon have been sleeping in it for a few years now, but Jack is now joining them.....kind of, he just ends up laying all over the floor no matter where he starts out. The top bunk mess is a ten year old's interpretation of "go make your bed". He really puts a lot of effort into his chores. No, Jack doesn't really sleep on that little mattress while it's under the other beds, we pull it out for him. Eventually it will be a real life trundle, but we just exhausted this month's home improvement energy ration. Maybe by the time he is seven.....

We had a similar set up in our boys' room, only with 2 sets of bunks and the little mattress under one of them. We ended up ditching the mattress and letting the little guy sleep right on the floor since, one, he would roll right off and end up on the floor anyway (or in bed with one of his brothers) and two, the mattress became a sort of trampoline and got ripped apart. Good thing it was a crib mattress and was just foam inside and not stuffing. Our original idea was to do trundles, but then we decided to go with drawers under the beds instead, since we ran out of room for dressers for 5 boys.
It looks like a great set-up. You have to work with the room you have and I completely identify---our old house had 950 square feet. We had three bedrooms, with three boys in one (two beds and one trundle), Joel with us, and Aidan had her own.
