Do you speak toddler?

Karen over at The Big Trade Off wrote of her daughter's first night without her "Gicky". It cracked me up. I love toddler talk. Some of our favorite kid words have stuck and our family still calls the items by their toddler-given name. Some examples:

  • "Shopping shoes". Or for short, "Shoppers". Noelle knew from the very beginning that there was something special about a sparkly pair of shoes.
  • "Boochees". This one is HUGE. We have blankets for wrapping up in when we are cold, but "boochees" what our thumb suckers hold up by their faces while they suck their thumbs. If you have seen it, you know what I mean. Hilarious.
  • "Boe-Jay". This is Jack's interpretation of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Which he loves almost as much as "Cee-yo". (cereal)
  • "Nakee". If you don't have clothes on, you are Nakee.
  • "take a tubby" You have to be Nakee to Take a Tubby.

I know you aren't supposed to repeat thing back to them the wrong way, but it's just so doggone cute! Only now we have our own little language around here. Please, assure me that we aren't the only ones who talk toddler all the time.

I love it. I think of my two little bros, my favorite phrases were Jacob's "frink" - meaning drink, he couldn't pronounce D's, and Sam's "dorky porky" - I think that was licorice. Like, where did "dorky porky" come from? It's ridiculous.

Let's see... we have

"NaNa" for bellybutton (which started out as my chest--nana=nursing, but it moved downward when DD3 weaned)
"Igglejuicy" for juice
And then there's the one we never repeated, but did manage to get a video of--DS7 could not say "tr"--it came out as "f." And he obsessed over "big trucks"--you figure it out!
I love toddler-talk!

Toddler speak in our house, if I remember correctly, was mostly made up of "NO!" As in,

Me: Come and eat
Them: NO
Me: Go to sleep
Them: NO
Me: Pick up these toys
Them: NO

Now that I think of it, my kids still speak toddler.

"I hu" is I'm full
That one sticks out in my mind because we always tried to break him of that one. Then it came out as "Fffff (breath in) hu"
"Keku" is, of course, Thank you. I love the word "miwk" for milk when ANY kid says it - that's my favorite.

Don't you love it when the kids try to talk to other people? When they try to make out what the child is saying, have you noticed that you automatically turn into an interpreter of toddler talk? It should almost be a skill to be put on a resume. :)

Right now we have "practor-practor" (chiropractor) and "bee-game" (all my husband's various child-safe video games, except the Italian Job which she calls the "crash game").

And, of course, there's, "Do mys-self!" Which applies to pouring milk, cereal, etc., but does not apply to wiping up the resulting mess.

My kids called firemen "fighter fighters". If you are naked you are a nudie baby. Your armpits are your wingers.

When I was a child I called fountains "water going up". Also when I was a child and was dressing up I would put on my mom's knee highs. If there was only one I would ask her where the other panty hoe was. :D

that is sooo cute!

I have a few to add:

Ball-guts = Vacuum

Hot Jew = Hot Juice which is milk

Beebutt = Syrup

Meem = Fan

we also talk about being 'nakes' for a 'baff'.

cute post!

Oh, I am just cracking up!!! I LOVED reading all these commments! My 6 yr old would always say "bun lilly" when he was a toddler, and we never did figure out what it meant. He doesn't remember either. My 3 yr old has a hard time with his r's and l's, they sound like w's. (Check out the book "Hooway for Wodney Wat" by Helen Lester regarding this speech pattern. It's great.)

I can't really remember any cute things they would say...I just remember my poor 3 yr old getting really upset when we couldn't figure out what he was trying to tell us...sometimes his older brother could interpret it for us though lol!

And how could I have forgotten "noiser" (vacuum cleaner)? She has her own toy "noiser" now and loves to "noise" her room.

OMGoodness I have tears in my eyes I'm laughing so hard at the "nakee" and "take a tubby" line. Hysterically funny. Oh I can't wait.

I used to babysit a girl who always wanted to read a "masagine" (magazine). I still say "masagine" b/c it cracks me up.

Here's my absolute favorite of Rob's phrases when he first started talking. When he was frustrated with something instead of saying "Oh, Man!" he would say, "Oh, Meat!". I used to roll on the ground when he would say that.

This is hilarious. We definitely talk crazy around here. We all call French Fries 'shenshy fies' like my little son with Down Syndrome calls them. And when someone wants a fried egg and toast for breakfast it's 'eggatoas'. For a long time one of my kids said 'wink' for drink. My little guy with DS uses the phrase 'liechaiw' and we're not sure what on earth it means. He says it over and over when he prays, sprinkling it in with all of his 'bessuhfood', take cawe uh dad', 'mawy (his sister) be good' stuff. Kids are fun aren't they?

This was cute. I love toddler talk too. We will forever call strawberries "dawbies" and hot dogs "ha-hogs"

I followed a link here from Lauren's blog. Your blog title just caught my eye for some reason. ;-)
