(This post is controversial. I am sharing MY personal beliefs and where God has brought me. In no way am I trying to force my thinking onto anyone else. There is so much more that I could write about this topic, but I'm going to try to keep it fairly short.)
A couple of days ago I was asked to write about why we have decided to have a large family. The comment brought a smile to my face, I could tell it was written with genuine interest as opposed to the more common shock and disbelief with which most people ask that question.
We started our family when we were young. Very young. We had a son and then less than two years later, a daughter. We were living far away from home, Nate was in college and we were dirt poor. Diiiiiirt poor. As Nate was wrestling with finishing up school and choosing his career path, we discovered that I was pregnant again. This pregnancy came as we took a happy turn in our lives. We had decided to move back to our home town, our lives were moving in a new direction. I remember sitting in a grocery store parking lot before the sun rose, waiting to pick up boxes for packing our belongings. I was oh so nauseous, the first few weeks of my pregnancy kept me on the verge of being sick at any given moment, but I was so, so happy. We were going home. And we were taking a rapidly growing little family with us.
We came back to our home town and we settled in to a new job and a new house and what do you know? I was pregnant again. If I was to be honest, I really struggled when I looked down at those two pink lines. What the heck were we doing? Didn't God know that I was struggling to keep it together with the three little ones that I already had? Why was He throwing another one into the mix so soon? Nate and I spent that next week coming to terms with the news. But then, by the end of the week, I started to miscarry. I was shocked at my emotions. How could I have been so hesitant just a few days ago and now I felt like my heart was being ripped out at the idea of losing this baby. God was beginning to work in me in a small way that I would look back and understand so much more deeply.
We grieved the loss of that little baby. I was faced with feelings that I had never felt before. We had always been able to become pregnant even without really trying or even thinking about it, and here I was, mourning over an empty womb. My heart bled as I watched other pregnant moms with their blossoming bellies, and I felt so raw. So dead. It was a teensy, tiny glimpse into the feelings that women must have when all they want is a child and their bodies won't comply.
We didn't wait the six weeks like the doctor recommended to become pregnant again. I had been hit with a two ton truck, I realized how much I truly desired to have another child. And this is when God started changing my heart. He placed women into my life who spoke new truths to me. He began to take my small little worldview and He tweaked it, and started showing me what HE had in mind. How HE views children. Nate and I battled through this together. Sometimes we were each other's opponents, and other times we were fighting side by side against what society tells us about kids and families. We dove into the the Word of God and we pleaded with Him to show us what He desired from us for our family.
I can't believe how my thinking has made a 180 degree turn. I used to slide right along side the popular thinking that kids were great and everything, but we needed to get them into the world quickly and close together so that we could get them grown and then get on with life. And it didn't seem that harsh when I was thinking it, but now when I look back, that's truly the lie that I was buying into. God challenged me to my inner core when he asked me to rethink my view on children. His word says that they are a blessing. A blessing. Was the way that I was living really reflecting that belief? Did I trust Him to take care of our family? To provide for us and to bring little souls into the world in His timing, or was I going to grab the steering wheel and show Him the best way? These are the questions that were laid onto my heart and I had to wrestle through each one personally and then with my husband.
So far, we have been given six, almost seven, beautiful healthy children. I cannot even begin to express to you the awe I stand in when I look at each one of them. They truly are woven by His hand. If I would have had my own way, who knows what our family would look like right now, but I can tell you that we would have missed out on some amazing blessings and lessons and joys that were planned by Him. I don't know how many kids we will have. It is the million dollar question that we are asked countless times by curious friends and family. All I know is that I don't want to miss out on something that the God of the universe has for me, because I want to limit His hand. Sure, if we had a lot less kids, we would have a lot more money, and a lot more time. You know what, that's not what I want in this life. I want to follow Him, even if his path isn't the most popular one, even if we look like weirdos. I'm learning a lot about myself through these little people in my life. Some things that are amazing and somethings that are ugly. I know I have a whole lot more to learn and I want Him to teach me. If these life lessons are taught through little people who pass though my home and into His world, then bring 'em on. My heart has plenty of room.

Heather, thanks for sharing! What a beautiful testimony. I too miscarried when I became pregant the 4th time. Michael hadn't gotten used to the idea yet, but when it happened, he cried like a baby. It took another 8 months before I became pregnant again.
Thanks for sharing a glimpse into your journey. I know there is so much more!
oh heather, you are incredible. you really are. i look at each of your kids and are so thankful for each of them, their sweet spirits, the blessings that they are. thank you for being who He has called you to be!!

So very beautiful. Thanks for putting it all into words. Your kids are so blessed to be so treasured!
You have a sibling and a child of your own in Heaven who, even though they never left the womb into this world, accomplished a precious mission for the Lord; they opened hearts to future blessings.
I think I better start taking my vitamins on a more regular basis to gear up a million grandkids!
Beautiful and honest. Thanks.
Heth, thanks being so candid with your thoughts. As one of seven, my mom was forever patronized (don't you know what causes that?!?). I am baby number four (and a huge surprise), so I am thankful they didn't stop when the "world" thought they should have. Mom even had a shirt that read "No, I'm not Mormon, Catholic or CRAZY-just blessed!"
And so are you, thanks again for the insight, my husband and I are in a current struggle if we will have any more...in Jesus, we'll see.
Thank you for sharing a beautifully written answer to that ever present question in everyone's mind.
I had to laugh when I had my 2 youngest at the grocery store today and two different ladies commented on how *full* my hands are. If only they knew...!
My hands are full, but God has enabled me to do much with those full hands and allows me to learn and grow along with the 6 1/2 kids that I have too.
Heather,
tears tears...I loved hearing this in your own words. The beauty of the Lord! You have shared the truth of God's word on a subject that is difficult for christian women to wrap their hearts and minds around at times. And I appreciate you sharing that it is something you and Nate have pondered and sought the Lord together for. This is so important! A husband and wife need to make these decisions together. Whether we are the mommy of two or twenty two, have we let God decide this, or have we decided what is best for our lives?? I often think of my dear friend who God has blessed with one and no more so far. She often receives criticism from others for having an only child as if to say she has made the choice herself.
I lost a baby at eight weeks before Hunter and I was devastated! I was so fearful I would not be able to have another child. I remember an older woman at the time coming up to me when Theo was only six weeks old, and she said by the look on my face she knew I was not done having children. By the third child I was really enjoying being a mommy. All of my friends thought I was crazy when I became pregnant with Hunter. I was already 36, and they just thought I should be done. And than God decided that my little neat family of four kids (2 girls and 2 boys) was not enough. I have to sadly admitt I was not too happy at the time and wrestled with God for almost two months before I could tell anyone I was pregnant. (except my husband of course) But today I am so thankful that decision was in God's hands and not my own. I wonder how much of our lives(not just children) we refuse to let God have control of, and therefore miss out on the blessings he has for us? We say, "God have your way in my life", and yet we limit the areas in which he can choose what is best. ouch! It is not alwaya about the number of children, but whether or not we are submitted completly to His leading in our life.
Great post, Heth. You've got some lucky kids there.
Heather, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. They were beautiful and so insightful. We have struggled to get kids here and I am so grateful for the two I have been blessed with. They have changed me for the better in so many different ways. Above all they have taught me how to be more patient, more kind, more forgiving, more Christlike!
Beautiful post, Heth. Although I was laughing at your title ... I mean, we all know *why* you have a lot of kids (wink, wink).
Mike and I have discussed having a large family, and we are open to the possibility, even though right now, I would be happy to never be pregnant again. But we'll see what God has in store for us!
Glad you shared, helps yet again with my struggle of HOW will I love my kids (my new one) and my one now. This reminded me. I want kids, believe me so that's not it I was just afraid I wouldn't love them all the same...
Heth, this is a wonderful post; thoughtfully written and so close to home. Thanks for sharing, and thank you for visiting my blog w/ your kind words!
I enjoyed reading this so much.
my sweet friend! What a beautiful truthful telling of His working in your life...I can't tell you how I love love love that truth can override our errent thinking...Im excited at the prospect of your new little one! Much Love and pregnancy health, may the Labor and Delivery be quick and smooth...may your darling me healthy and happy in the arms of his/her loving, generous mother...
all my love,
Tanya
I love this post so much.
Your obedience to what God put on your heart (and your husband's heart) inspires me like crazy. That willingness to be obedient - to follow His heart regardless of circumstances - can encourage all of us, whether we have one child (like me!) or almost seven (like you!).
Thanks for sharing your story.
That was beautiful! Thanks for sharing and for being willing to break the mold. It makes me so sad to hear some of the negativity directed at people with "lots" of kids- like it's just so absurd (an I only have 4). They don't know that we are the ones with extra blessings!
What a beautiful, insightful post. DH and I are of the "quiverful" mentality and look forward to the "blessings" the Lord brings into our lives. We are often asked if we are done having children (we have 2 currently) and when we answer "no" there is usually the question of "well how many do you want, then?" Our answer is usually one of the following:
DH says "we want the record",
we have no set limit,
we say as many as the Lord decides to give us.
With the last answer, we typically get a deer-in-the-headlights look from the questioner, LOL.
When DH and I decided, together, to leave our fertility and family planning in the hands of the Almighty, it was scary at first, but now it is so liberating. It was the first step in our true dependence on Him. If we were willing to let the Lord decide our family size in His timing, why would we not trust Him to provide all things for us according to His will??
Thank you for expressing so eloquently what so many Christian women struggle with and how you and Nate came to the place you are. Absolute beautiful.

georgous!
You guys have a wonderful family and are incredibly blesssed!
Your heart-felt words are so rich and full of passion. I love seeing the way God is working and what a beautiful family He has blessed you with. By the way, I'm taking notes!
Be thankful you can have children. There are many people out there who cannot.
That was a beautiful post, and I'm really glad I happened to drop by for it. I just had a post up myself asking mother of many how they handle life and what helped them make their decisions. I appreciate your wisdom and love for your children.
Thanks for sharing your story. We have 3 and are seeking what God would have us to do from here. It's hard to submit to his will!!
Beautiful post! God's been working on our family too. We're hoping to add #4 sometime soon. Even a year ago that wouldn't have been an option. They are blessings.
Thanks for the post. We have two, neither planned, and have discussed the best timing for the third and then laugh because we realize we don't have control! We haven't completly discussed the whole subject so it is a good reminder to seek Gods will in that area as well. I have ideals but they might not be the Lords ideals.
Wow! A lot of that sounds familiar. Although, I have to admit, panic has set in for brief instances during more than one pregnancy. faith is hard to have when you look at the whole picture, (weddings for 5, college for 5, more than likely braces for 5), that's when I have to look back to that dirt poor time, when sending my husband back to college seemed impossible, and yet God led us through. And we keeping making baby steps forward, even with all those babies. I never imagined having a large family, I am one of 2, my husband an only, but I can't imagine my life another way.
Here's to piles and piles of laundry, 3 load dishwasher days, and jelly covered walls, that make every night slumber parties amd family baseball games possible!
Thanks for sharing. I love your attitude. Your family is awesome and a wonderful blessing to all who know you. Sometimes, I wish that were the plan God had for my family, but He knows best what we need.
(smiling)
your story sounds much like mine. my first two are 13 months apart. my biggest gap is 22 months. i miscarried between 2 & 3 and between 4 & 5 (and i did NOT wait the 6 weeks afterwards, either!)... and there is an amazing amount of emptiness and grief at the loss of a baby even that early on.
thanks for sharing. :)
An absolutely beautiful post, Heth. I can't imagine a single one of the kids not being here. I can't imagine you not being part of our family. You have no idea how you have affected me, how God has worked through you to grow me. I am so excited for your new baby, I wish so much I could be there.
Thank you for sharing this post, it is so nice to know there are other people out there with "large" families. Ours isn't HUGE...but it is 4 kids and people already make fun of us, that is for sure! :) I am thrilled with our family and I am working on my husband (tee hee) for an adoption of a child...we'll see where God takes us. I just wanted to say thank you.
I come from a large family (9 kids) and when I was young I often wished we had more money and my parents had more time for me, but I love each and every one of my siblings so much that I could never imagine not having all of them in my life. Your children are so blessed that you have been willing to welcome then ALL into the world together.
This is wonderful, Heth, and so delicately and perfectly said.
You are very blessed indeed, and this was a beautiful post. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Hey- I have a question I would like to ask you but it is unrelated and possibly controversial. I didn't find your email address. If you have an email you use for your friends online could you email me at kiliblog@cox.net
If you don't then reply on my blog and we can discuss it somewhere there on an older post or something!
Thanks :)
As a mom to an impending 3 (currently 2)- who some days wonders how in the world I will EVER manage when our newest little seedling arrives - I sure enjoyed reading this! Soooo precious!
Oh Heth I forgot to tell you what My hubby says when people ask us if we are done having the babies..
He says "why would we be done when we are doing Gods work" and he grabs me plants a kiss on me and smacks my bottom...
YOU SHOULD SEE THE LOOKS ON PEOPLES FACES...
Oh and another saying we have come up with
"we finally found a new hobby, we got color tv" hehehehahahahha Cracks me up that people think we have to be somewhat OFF to have a nice almost half dozen children ehehhe
Hope all is well and girl you keep me smiling!!! Love ya Tanya craftygirls
I'm just glad there are people out there who aren't Mormon or Catholic who are having large families. Kind of balances us out. :)
I have four daughters, and that's it for us. What I find inspiring about life is that if you let God dictate your life, you will end up with the number of kids that you can handle best.
Kudos to all of you who can handle a bunch. I admire you.
A beautiful, well written post. Thank you so much for sharing! You are truly blessed! :)
It's amazing how a sad circumstance can be a catalyst for change of heart... for the better.
You are in inspiration!!!
That was breathtakingly beautiful. I'm so glad JulieQ linked to it. We have five lovely children, and I miscarried between #2 and #3. You summed up my experience very well! Thanks for your courage and insight.
Heather,
I have no idea who you are but I wanted to say kudos to you. How wonderful you have allowed Heavenly Father to guide your family decisions! In my experience I have found that God makes us equal to the tasks he sets before us and then blesses us immensely on top of that. Faith is the operative word here. My husband and I also decided to have our family based on what we felt God wanted us to do. One at a time we invited children to join our family. We didn't know how many that would be, but we always knew there was "one more" until our youngest son joined our clan as number 11 almost 21 years after the birth of our first beautiful daughter. He is now 11 years old and I am coming out on the other end of this great adventure, believe it or not, intact and fully functional. I am thankful on a daily basis that Heavenly Father blessed me to be the mother of a "large!" family. In fact, it's kept me from getting old! At 54 I'm still hanging around grade school with mothers the age of my older children! My 11 year old is the apple of my eye and I wouldn't have missed out having him for any amounts of unfettered freedom. I'm afraid I have allowed myself one small vanity - I felt it a triumph for mothers of large families everywhere when a store clerk asked me with my 11th pregnacy if this was my "first" baby. Granted she was young, inexperienced and probably needed glasses but....
My adult children are my best friends, the most wonderful company I could imagine and they are the best of friends with each other. Our family gatherings give me a deep satisfaction I can't describe. The many years of both joyful and seemingly unending labor are beginning to bear bounteous fruits.
I have learned to never judge another woman's situation as far as child bearing, and I would never say that everyone should do as I have done, but I do feel sad about the prevalent philosophy in our society that views children as impediments to "real" life or as you said, something to have and be done with.
Something to look forward to - I now have almost five grandchildren and the rewards of grandparenting are getting to experience that "new baby" joy without the work and stress. It's the frosting, the cake and the cherry on top!
May the Lord's choicest blessings be with you and your wonderful family. Tell your husband he is a total gem.
A kindred mother!
